Where a car starts to matter is the countryside, the vineyards of Chianti, the farmhouse-dotted Val d’Orcia, and the smaller hill towns that buses reach only a few times a day. If your dream is cypress-lined back roads, hire a car for a few days; if it’s Renaissance cities and great food, the train is all you need.
Best car-free bases
Florence is the ideal hub, central, walkable and superbly connected. Lucca and Pisa make relaxed alternatives, both an easy train ride from Florence.
What you might miss
Remote wineries, agriturismo stays deep in the hills, and spontaneous detours. Many of these run day tours from Florence or Siena if you’d rather not drive.
