The city is about halfway from Dhaka to Chattogram, near Tripura, in India.
Shalban Vihara stands at Shalmanpur, 8 km west of Cumilla. A Buddhist monastery site from the 7th century, built under King Bhava Deva, was used by monks for prayer and study until the 12th century. Salban Vihara, Kotila Mura and Charpatra Mura are the three notable sites unearthed here, Kotila Mura having held three stupas for Buddha, Sangha and Dharma. Comilla Jagannath Temple, also called Sateroratna Mandir, was built by Ratna Manikya II, king of Tripura, in the 18th century. Next to Shalban Bihar, the Mainamati Museum displays stone sculptures, terracotta plaques, ancient coins and weapons from Neolithic to Hindu and Buddhist times.
