Overview

Jiangmen lies in Guangdong Province immediately to the west of Zhuhai. The rural Siyi area is the ancestral homeland of about 4 million overseas Chinese.

Building of the Kaiping Watchtowers started early in the Qing Dynasty, with much of it in the 1920s and 1930s, as protection against bandits. Tea Hut Park in central Jiangmen occupies the site of the Tea Hut Temple, built in the Ming Dynasty to honour the astronomer monk Zhang Sui of the Tang Dynasty. Western-style buildings line the city's waterfront, above all in Chikan.

Good to know

  • Most of the watchtowers lie beyond Kaiping as seen from Jiangmen, so staying in Kaiping avoids a very long day.
  • By highway the city is 100 kilometres (62 mi) from both Guangzhou and Zhuhai, and it faces the South China Sea to the south.
