Overview

Malang had about 887,000 people in 2017 and 2.8 million across its urban area, making it East Java's second largest city.

Ijen Boulevard is lined with bougainvillea and old colonial buildings, among them the Brawijaya Army Museum, the Catholic Church and the city library. Jodipan and Tridi are linked by the Ngalam Indonesia Glass Bridge across the Brantas River, Indonesia's first glass bridge. Singosari Temple, about 12 km north of Malang, is a Hindu temple that dates from 1300 AD. Candi Kidal, a 13th-century Hindu temple linked to the Singhasari Kingdom, is thought to have been a funerary shrine for King Anusapati. Ijen Boulevard is closed to most motor traffic for Car Free Day, usually held every Sunday.
