The heart of historic Izumi is its preserved samurai residence area, where two houses are open to the public: 出水市公開武家屋敷「税所邸」 and 出水市公開武家屋敷「竹添邸」. Both give a tangible sense of how the town's samurai families once lived, with the kind of architecture and layout that has survived from the era when Izumi served as a fortified settlement on the domain's frontier. Walking between the two makes for a natural way to spend a morning.

Religious sites are scattered through the town. Kashikuri Shrine and 八坂神社 are both Shinto shrines with their own local significance, while 出水市護国神社 serves a more commemorative role. None require much time individually, but together they give a good feel for the town's spiritual landmarks.

麓町, whose name literally points to the foot of a hill or castle settlement, is closely tied to the old samurai residence district and is the natural starting point for exploring Izumi's historic character. 本町, meaning something like the 'main town', functions as a central district and is a good base for orienting yourself before heading out to the sights.
中央町 and 昭和町 sit near the town centre and make sensible spots for accommodation or a coffee stop between attractions, while 向江町, 緑町, 黄金町, 五万石町, 文化町 and 上鯖渕 round out the town's residential and outlying areas, each contributing to Izumi's low-key, everyday atmosphere rather than being sightseeing destinations in their own right.
